Running out of hot water is one of the two most common complaints we take, and the instinct is always the same: the tank is too small, buy a bigger one.
Sometimes that is right. Frequently the tank is fine and the problem is the rate at which it is being emptied. A shower draws hot and cold together, so the flow rate of the head sets how fast the stored volume disappears. A three star head flows no more than nine litres a minute. Plenty of older heads flow well above that, and in an original house here the head is probably as old as the bathroom.
Change it and the same tank lasts noticeably longer, because it is being drawn down more slowly. It costs a fraction of a new system, it takes minutes, and it is worth trying before anybody quotes you a cylinder.
It matters for sizing too. If we size a replacement against the flow rates the house has now, and you change the fixtures next year, you have bought a bigger system than you needed. That is a conversation worth having in one go rather than in two.

Less hot water drawn is less hot water heated, so yes in principle. We are not going to put a figure on your household because it depends entirely on how much you shower and any number we invented would be dishonest.
Soft water is why they fail this particular way. In hard-water places a tank silts up with scale. Sydney's is not like that, so the sacrificial anode is consumed protecting the steel and the tank starts corroding once it is gone, or an element burns out. Both are frequently repairs.
Replace. Water from the body of the cylinder means the steel has gone and there is no patch for that. Shut it off and ring, because the damage compounds daily.
Diagnosis is $120 to $250 and comes off the repair. A showerhead replaced is $120 to $250. An element or thermostat is $250 to $550. An anode is $300 to $600. A storage replacement is $1,400 to $2,800.
